How Mr. Speedy Plumbing & Rooter Got Started : A True Story
On a hot summer’s day in 2007, Fred Marzouk decided Los Angeles needed a good, dependable, reliable plumbing service. He saw that people are generally dissatisfied with the service provided by most plumbers, and he decided that there was a real need for a new, professional Los Angeles plumbing company.
Mr. Marzouk founded Mr. Speedy Plumbing and Rooter Inc. in Los Angeles to provide the plumbing services lacking in the community. Customers’ phone calls would be answered promptly, politely and efficiently; service technicians would be dispatched promptly so customers wouldn’t have to sit home all day waiting for the plumber; only the most knowledgeable, experienced and polite plumbers would be hired, who knew all about plumbing and who took pride in their workmanship; he would provide his service technicians with new vans loaded with the very latest plumbing equipment, tools, fixtures and replacement parts so his technicians could do the job right first time and customers wouldn’t have to wait while the plumber went to fetch the required parts; he installed dual GPS devices in every vehicle so plumbers could find their destinations easily and he could locate his plumbing vans wherever they were.

Customers Come FIRST!
Fred also decided that customers deserve to be treated better: rather than give “blind” estimates over the phone, he decided that he would not give estimates until his plumbing techs had visited the customer and done a thorough analysis of the issue at hand and could inform the customer of all the options available and the most effective and cost-efficient method of resolving the issue.
This way there are no surprises – the customer knows exactly what is involved and exactly how much the job will cost.
Fred also decided to charge fair prices, and instructed his plumbers to always behave in a polite manner and to clean up after they have done the work. Then he took it one step further – he would offer a written warranty on all his services – covering both labor and parts. He then hired an excellent customer service team to take care of customers like no-one else in town.
So, in 2007, Fred obtained his license from the California State Contractors License Board (License Number 915519). An experienced businessman with a great track record, he obtained the necessary financing to hire the best people, and he bought several service vans, stocking them with all the necessary equipment. He also stocked his new downtown facility with all the parts and equipment necessary to operate a great plumbing service.

Mr. Speedy’s headquarters is located in the Arts District in Downtown Los Angeles. It is the only full-service plumbing company actually located in the downtown L.A. area bounded by the 110 Harbor Freeway, the 10 Santa Monica Freeway, the 101 Hollywood Freeway and the L.A. River. It is the only full-service plumbing and drain-cleaning service with a physical location in the chic Arts District of Downtown Los Angeles.
Their distinctive blue-and-white service vans are seen all over town every day. The company has since opened an additional facility in Huntington Beach to serve Orange County and a third facility in Concord, CA to serve the San Francisco Bay Area.
The company has made a huge investment in technology and owns the finest equipment in the plumbing business:
- To clear the most stubborn obstructions from sewer and drain lines, Mr. Marzouk purchased several new Hydrojet machines from US Jetter, Inc.;
- To detect concealed leaks underground, behind walls, or even beneath a slab of concrete, he purchased the latest electronic leak detection devices;
- To reline or replace underground pipes with minimal invasive digging, he purchased “trenchless technology” from Perma Liner Inc.;
- He purchased a large number of all types of water heaters and became a certified distributor and installer of water heaters from the major brands, including Bradford White and Rheem.
The company’s warehouses carry a huge supply of garbage disposal machines from all the leading manufacturers, they have several electric-powered cabling/auguring devices, they own the latest video systems so their technicians can camera a line to determine the exact nature and location of a stoppage.
And he purchased all the fixtures and parts necessary to be able to resolve any plumbing problem without having to run around all over town looking for parts or fixtures.
Mr. Speedy is now a leading player in the plumbing business and is the fastest-growing independent plumbing company in California. The company services thousands of residential and commercial customers, and their regular customers include major Hollywood celebrities, local landmark restaurants, and many national retail accounts including Ross Dress For Less, National Stores, Factory 2-U and Performance Bicycle.
Computerized Office Leads to Efficiency and Cost Savings.
In 2009, Mr. Marzouk then took the company to the next level: he computerized Mr. Speedy’s office and become a totally paperless office. He hired the best software brain in the business and had him build custom field service management software that could handle every aspect of the company’s operations. After four years of development and a huge financial investment, the system is now fully developed and is used throughout the company in every department. Each member of staff is provided with one of the latest Samsung Android smartphones, and all personnel can access the company’s computer system from any location. Today, the dispatching, scheduling and work orders are all entered, processed and accessed on the computer.
Mr Speedy’s field service management software is now being used throughout the company:
- The dispatcher posts each work order to the computer system. The plumbing technicians can consult the work orders and company schedules at any time and know exactly where they have to be next.
- Each van is equipped with dual GPS devices – one to find the customer easily and one to locate each van in the field so dispatchers can send the nearest plumber to the next assignment on the calendar.
- The smartphones are also used to teleconference between the service techs in the field and the office, with the tech showing on camera the exact situation so that senior master plumbers in other locations – and even the boss – can view the situation and together discuss the best way to resolve the issue at hand.
- All the invoicing is handled through the system: when the tech completes a job, he presents the customer with his smartphone and a stylus, and the customer signs for the invoice with the stylus and the invoice is then sent directly to the customer’s email inbox.
Going paperless has made Mr. Speedy the most efficient and cost-effective plumbing company in Los Angeles, able to offer the fastest dispatch times in the business and allowing everyone – technicians, executives and customer service personnel – to provide the best service. Of course, the field service management software system also controls and tracks the movement of all parts, fixtures, and equipment, and qualifies Mr. Speedy as the most technologically-sophisticated licensed plumbing company in California. Master Plumber Greg
with over forty years of field experience, is an expert at installing, troubleshooting and repairing entire plumbing systems. An industrial engineer, Greg maps out everything using architectural blueprints, is an excellent troubleshooter, and has handled every plumbing issue known to man. When the company first started, and had not yet made the investment in expensive hydro jet machines, Greg led an in-house team that built a hydro jet machine from scratch (See picture). Dean Bates: Mr. Speedy’s Shop Manager
A Brit with a sweet English accent, Dean is a graduate of the Willesden Plumbing Technical College, London, England, where he spent five years learning everything about plumbing. Dean is an expert in the use of Hydro jet machines, and is fully conversant in all issues involving commercial and residential plumbing, including drainage issues, water heater installation, and electronic leak detection. Dean is a sewer camera specialist, and is an expert in sewer line repair and replacement.
Saville Katz : Mr. Speedy’s Director of Content Creation and Distribution.
A former TV news journalist whose credentials include MTV News, VH-1, Showtime and “Entertainment Today” as well as significant experience in the public relations field, Saville creates the content for the company’s website, blogs and social media. Saville is also an accomplished guitar player, vocalist and percussionist, and has played onstage with members of The Grateful Dead, Rod Stewart’s band and Bob Dylan’s band.
Mike G. Smith: Mr. Speedy’s Marketing Manager and Marketing Specialist.
His job is to make sure Mr. Speedy Plumbing is visible and listed in the major search engines. When you find Mr.Speedy listed in search engines and directories like Google, Bing, Yahoo, Yelp and Yext, it’s because of Mike’s efforts and expertise. An industrial engineer by training, Mike handles online customer inquiries and directs the company’s online reputation management. When he’s not working Mike enjoys watching movies (we believe he has seen the new “Godzilla” movie five times!)
And Mr. Speedy even has its own genuine “Joe The Plumber”.
Armenian-born, Joe has been a US citizen since 2001, and has ten years’ experience in the plumbing business. “The small plumber with big power”, Joe has a deep understanding of plumbing and drainage systems, and knows all about plumbing equipment, fixtures and parts. With his slight build, Joe is the perfect plumbing technician for those tiny crawl spaces under houses that most (larger) plumbing techs can’t get into. Another motorcycle fan, Joe can be seen around town on his 750 Harley.
